New law to screw artists

Hello Everyone! I urge you to please take a look at this article when you have a moment:
http://drawn.ca/2008/05/13/oppose-the-orphan-works-act-of-2008/

I don't normally forward along these sorts of things, but those of us who create and those of us who enjoy the visual arts need to stand up to this new proposal by our friends in Congress.

Essentially the Orphan Works Act would require any artist to actively seek registered copyright on EVERY creative output or else anyone could steal and sell that image. Currently, the act of creation itself imparts copyright (i.e. I don't have to register every single sketch and painting I do with the government or private registrar to ensure that i retain the legal and monetary rights to the image). The logistical and ethical implications are staggering... and be assured that there would be plenty of people waiting to take advantage of this.

I don't know that this includes music or written material but that would be a logical extension.

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this email template and send it off to congress to show your opposition. It really means a lot.
